BCorp Recertification

Big news at COOK HQ, so big we broke out the cupcakes: we’ve just been recertified as a B Corporation – part of a growing community of companies pursuing business as a force for good in society.

It means we’ve once again passed a tough evaluation covering how we treat staff; our impact on the environment; how we run the company and what we do for our community. We scored an 83 out of 200: not exactly in the premier league of B Corps (some score 150+) but three whole points higher than last time when we scraped through with the minimum 80 required to certify (and the test has got much tougher in the past two years).

We helped launch the B Corp movement officially in the UK last September, alongside 60-odd other great companies such as Lily’s Kitchen pet food and Elvis & Kresse, our near-neighbours in Kent who make sustainable luxury goods. Globally there are now more than 1,600 certified B Corps from big, familiar brands like Ben & Jerry’s and Patagonia, to small start-ups.

Businesses can’t become B Corporations because of a persuasive, feel-good PR campaign or because the CEO is a bit of a hippy. You have to keep up-to-date with best practices and pass the rigorous evaluation to get and keep your certification. And that’s the point, really. It’s all very well to say COOK is about shared and durable prosperity, equal opportunities, or sustainability but to prove it we need an independent body to keep us on our toes and, occasionally, kick our backside.

New members are joining us all the time, looking to create a society with equality of opportunity; a healthy environment; strong communities; and work with dignity and purpose. We think that’s an idea most people can get behind. Please get in touch if you want to find out more.
